The Debut part 1 (The Student Nurse Experience)

I was on duty last night Thursday good thing though, there weren't any life-threatening emergency in our area. When midnight struck, I suddenly remembered the times when I was still a Nursing student and went on my way to my very first hospital exposure or experience. I recalled that we were assigned in a private hospital somewhere in Sapang Palay from 6pm to 6am. That was my debut as an on duty Nurse-student-staff and was assigned, with a partner to the Emergency Room.

That evening was quite memorable because it was my first assist during an emergency that required the patient a minor-can be performed at the Emergency Room-surgery. My first case that I wrote down on my RLE handbook. My group-mates were happy about my fish (Because we were required to fill a certain number of cases for us to be able to take the Licensure exam after we graduate.)

That same year was also my first hand experience of a patient expiring right in front of me in an emergency room on a hospital here in Quezon City. I admit I was nervous during that time but after a minute I was calm and composed, I helped perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation-though I didn't exactly know how to until after I observed one of my Nurse-staff perform the actual thing-for more than 5 minutes and also helped in providing ventilation using a bag-valve mask. Sad to say we weren't able to revive the patient.

In the same Emergency Room I also saw vehicular accident victims and those that were stabbed but able to make it for an emergency procedure, even those term pregnant women who are about to give birth. Hypertensive patients rushed because of sudden tingling and dizziness and vomiting, people with difficulty of breathing, people who have been poisoned-either by food or by chemicals-and those that came just for a routine check-up.

Last in line

My week started with a food poisoned father and son, both were seen with redness and have abnormal vital signs, their pulses are high, breathing fast, blood pressure fluctuating. Both are weak and as we are told, the father almost passed out. Luckily, their family members quickly rushed them to a nearest hospital and that is where I am at.

We attended to the son the most because his allergic reaction seem severe. Our resident immediately ordered intravenous insertion and dose him with medications so that the reaction would minimize. Just in time! What a blessing. Afterwards the son felt the effect of the drug as he felt drowsy and sleepy.

After half an hour, suddenly, an unexpected incident occurred. The oldest sibling, the ate-as we were told that she is in the same field as ours-the one who assisted in rushing them to the emergency room. Her face turned reddish-as red as an apple-and she too felt like her body is getting heavy. We immediately assisted her and gave her medical treatment right away.

It came upon unto me that: As a health care professional, I must always be careful and be strong in times of dire situations. And that to save the lives of others, one must have a clear mind and sound judgement. In order to save the lives of many, one must think about his own safety first for danger attacks at random.
